My Contribution To The United States of America

Katie Spalinger

“My contribution to the United States of America”…as I sit back and think about this topic, numerous things come to mind. All the things that I have done, and everything that I have yet to do floods my mind and I think about how I might go about doing it all. My life has always been so planned out, yet recently, my dreams have changed and my hopes have wandered. After high school ends, I plan to attend college, hopefully in Western Washington, or even the Air Force Academy. I have dreamt for years of attending the Air Force Academy in Colorado or the Naval Academy in Annapolis on the east coast. I wanted to be a Falcon, play on the Volleyball team and go far. I wanted to graduate and move on to flight school where I would eventually become a pilot and travel the world, and later fight for my country. I still want this.

I am a natural born dreamer. I spend my days thinking of my future, and the future of the United States. I feel strongly about certain political issues, mainly of the environment or our presidential campaigns. My family has always felt strongly about those topics in particular, though I am not really into politics. I will never allow myself to become a politician, nor will I ever allow myself to just sit at home and watch the world crumble beneath my own eyes. I plan to have a life full of adventure and experience and I refuse to get myself stuck in a job that centers around the office. This is one reason the Air Force appealed to me so. Politics are so serious and corrupting that I don’t want to be involved with them directly.

As for what I have done for the United States, I can list off a few things. Volunteerism is the category I have accomplished most in. I have spent many hours slaving away at different things, from volunteering at the library to planting the garden in the town square. I spent parts of my summer volunteering at the Moose Research Center down on the Kenai Peninsula, working endless hours on tearing down the barn and feeding stalls and then rushing to feed the moose calves. As I worked there, I contemplated going into the Biological profession and I still think about this. Though my mind still wanders back to the Air Force.

What is it that appeals to me so much about the Air Force? Well, for starters, I wished to be in the Navy SEALs, yet because I am a woman, my dreams have been crushed and any hopes of that are dependant upon a miracle that one day, women will be allowed to train to be Navy SEALs. My back up to Plan A was the Air Force, to join and become a fighter pilot of the F-15. The benefits of joining the Air Force are unbelievable. They pay for college and training, and they only expect a couple years of returned service. Health benefits and once in a lifetime opportunities only add to the splendor.

I sometimes think that I am too ambitious for my own good. I want to do so much, and I have not the time to do it all. Half of what I wish to do involves this country and the other half is just full of personal goals. My life is not long enough to accomplish it all, but I will settle for a large amount of it being achieved. My contributions to the future of the United States of America are small, but helpful. I plan to fight for our country, and if it is so, I will die for our country as well.
